How to Make a DIY Balloon Garland with Strip

[FULL GUIDE] Simple and Easy steps to Make a Balloon Garland

Are you looking for a decor element to serve as the focal point at your next party or celebration? Or perhaps you find your current decoration plan too simple, and need that "one thing" to take it over the top?

Balloon garlands (also called a balloon arch) are just what you need to glam up your next birthday party, baby shower, bridal shower, or dinner party.

You have probably seen the gorgeous pictures on Instagram and Pinterest, and wondered how much it would cost to have one of those made for you. Other than the cost of supplies which can be as low as $20 - $100, you wouldn't need to spend any money on your show stopper. Take a moment to pause and think of all the nice things you can do with the savings from your decoration. I don't know about you but I'm thinking spa date, dinner at a fancy restaurant, a short getaway, or perhaps goodie bags for your guests to let them know that you appreciate them. Best of all, you do not need any prior craft or balloon decorating experience.

We include in this post, a detailed supply list, and a step-by-step guide, to help walk you through the process. No matter the outcome, your creation will be beautiful and unique to you!

Before you start - what you need

  • All-inclusive balloon garland kit: This kit contain all you need to make your show stopper and include balloons, balloon tying tools, a balloon decorating strip, and glue strips. Shop all-inclusive balloon garland kits here
    • High-quality latex balloons – Choose the colors that match the decor scheme you have in mind.
    • Balloon tying tool – We highly recommend this tool, especially if you are inflating more than 10 balloons. Learn how to use them here.
    • Balloon decorating strip – Otherwise known as a balloon strip, plastic strip, or balloon tape, is quite frankly magic! It serves as the frame for the garland that you will be creating and eliminates the hassle of sewing your latex balloons together. Most importantly, it allows you to change things up even after the garland is complete.
    • Glue strips – Fill out your garland by gluing on extra latex balloons. If you have a variety of sizes, I recommend leaving the smallest size out and using these to fill out your garland once it has been hung.
  • Electric balloon pump – Perhaps this may not be necessary for some, however, a balloon pump will help you literally save your breath! Shop electric pump here.
  • Wall hooks – I recommend using command hooks (or a similar brand) to prevent ruining the area where you are hanging the final product. Command hooks come off easily from the wall without ruining it. We have made another post on how to hang your garland on a wall. Be sure to check It out. Shop wall hooks here.
Project time: 60 – 90 mins

Step 1: Inflate up your balloons

Choose your color scheme and your balloon colors accordingly. Then, blow up your balloons to various sizes to give your garland a nice shape and form. Of course, if you are using our kits, you may have up to 3 different sizes of balloons.

Use an electric pump to speed up the process. Or enlist the help of your family and friends to blow up your balloons with you. Knot your inflated balloons using a tying tool, or by hand.

Pro Tip:Leave out some small balloons for filling in the spaces in your garland

Step 2: Attach your balloons to the balloon decorating strip

You should decide whether you want alternating colors for every hole on the balloon decorating strip, or if you want to make tiny color clusters for a more coordinated look.

Leave some length of the balloon decorating strip on either side empty so that you can hang your creation easily later on.

Each hole segment on the balloon decorating strip has a small hole and a big hole. Pass the knot through the big hole, then slide it through to the smaller hole to lock it in place.

Pro Tip: Vary your balloons in color and size as you add them to the line.

Depending on your desired shape for your garland, mark out (using a pencil) the spots on the wall where you want to stick your hooks.

Create the frame of the garland by sticking your hooks to the wall or area where you intend on hanging it.

Step 4: Now, it's time to put your garland up.

Install your garland on the wall in sections, supporting the weight of the rest with your hands.

Pro Tip: Clear a free hole in your balloon decorating strip to hang your garland to the hooks or nails.

Step 5: Fill in any holes with the smaller balloons.

Using your glue strips, fill in any holes with the smaller balloons, thus creating a fuller look. We don't recommend a glue gun as it may pop balloons.

Step 6: Decorate the rest of the space.

We have set ours as a backdrop for our dessert table adorned with a DIY no-sew tulle table skirt. This adds some extra glam to our balloon arch or garland and emphasizes our color scheme.

Pro Tip: Feel free to add palm fonds, faux flowers, or ribbons to your DIY balloon arch or garland, depending on your party theme.

Now that you've created your own balloon arch or garland, it's time to stand back and admire your creation. Remember, it was all your doing. You should be proud of your work!

Finally, step in front of your garland and take gorgeous pictures!

Here's a complimentary tutorial on how to make your own balloon garland by our pal, Anastasia Onishchenko.

Keep in mind that there are many ways to showcase your DIY balloon arch or garland especially since it can stay up for up to one week. We chose to highlight ours with a dessert table underneath to which we would add sweet treats in the same color scheme.

However, you don't have to install your garland by the dessert table. Here are some alternative locations:

  • As a photo booth backdrop
  • Above the entryway
  • Above the dining table
  • Near a fireplace
  • By the gift table

Now that you have followed our guide, you should be confident about hosting a party that will impress your guests. No matter the event or reason for celebration, a DIY balloon arch or garland is a great focal point decor element.

Best of all, it doesn't have to be perfect. Whatever you create, rest assured it will be unique. And you would have saved a significant amount of money DIY-ing this balloon arch or garland.

You can now use your savings for an after-party spa date for yourself, or throw it into more treats and snacks for your guests - something they would really thank you for!

I hope seeing how easy it is to make a balloon garland will inspire you to try your hands at it for your next party. Get ready for the oohs and from your guests though!
