DIY Balloon Arch Supplies
- Balloons – Choose the colors that match the decor scheme you have in mind
- Balloon Pump – Perhaps this may not be necessary for some, however, a balloon pump will help you literally save your breath!
- Balloon Decorating Strip – The balloon decorating strip is quite frankly magic! It serves as the frame for the arch or garland that you will be creating and eliminates the hassle of sewing your balloons together. Most importantly, it allows you to change things up even after the garland is complete.
- Low-Temperature Glue Gun – Fill out your garland by gluing on extra balloons. If you have a variety of sizes, I recommend leaving the smallest size out and using these to fill out your garland once it has been hung.
- Hooks – I recommend using Command hooks (or a similar brand) to prevent ruining the area where you are hanging the final product.
How to Make a Balloon Arch
Project Time: 60 – 90 mins
Step 1: Blow up your balloons
Choose your color scheme and your balloon colors accordingly. Then, blow up your balloons to various sizes to give your arch a nice shape and form. Of course, if you are using our DIY Balloon Arch Kit, we have already provided 3 different sizes for you.
Use a hand pump or an electric pump to speed up the process. Or enlist the help of your family and friends to blow up your balloons with you.
Pro Tip: Leave out some small balloons for filling in the spaces in the balloon arch once you put it up. This will give your balloon arch a fuller look.
Step 2: Attach your balloons to the balloon decorating strip
You should decide whether you want alternating colors every hole on the balloon decorating strip, or if you want to make tiny color clusters for a more coordinated look.
Leave some length of the balloon decorating strip on either side empty so that you can hang your balloon arch easily later on.
Each hole segment on the balloon decorating strip has a small hole and a big hole. Pass the knot through the big hole, then slide it through to the smaller hole to lock it in place.
Pro Tip: Vary your balloons in color and size as you add them to the line.
Step 3: Stick the hooks on the wall
Depending on your desired shape for the balloon arch, mark out (using a pencil) the spots on the wall where you want to stick your hooks.
Create the frame of the balloon arch by sticking your hooks to the wall or area where you are hanging it.
Pro Tip: Use a brand of hooks that will not ruin your wall. If you are not concerned with wall damage, then go ahead and use some nails.
Step 4: Now, it’s time to put your balloon arch up.
Install your balloon arch on the wall in sections, supporting the weight of the rest of the DIY balloon arch with your hands. If you are using sturdy hooks, you do not need to use
Pro Tip: Clear a free hole in your balloon decorating strip to hang your balloon arch to the hooks or nails.
Step 5: Using your low-temp glue gun, fill in any holes with the smaller balloons, thus creating a fuller balloon arch.
We recommend a low-temperature glue gun to avoid popping your balloons. High temperature can melt the balloons and cause them to pop.
Pro Tip: Ensure that the tip of the gun does not touch the balloon as it might pop. Hover the glue gun above the balloon to add a drop of adhesive.
Step 6: Decorate the rest of the space where the balloon arch with sit.
We have set ours as a backdrop for our dessert table adorned with a DIY no-sew tulle table skirt. This adds some extra glam to our balloon arch and emphasizes our color scheme.
Pro Tip: Feel free to add pal fonds, flowers or ribbons to your DIY balloon arch, depending on your party theme.
Now that you’ve created your own balloon arch, it’s time to stand back and admire your creation. Remember, it was all your doing. You shoud be proud of your work!
Finally, step in front of your garland and take gorgeous pictures!
Keep in mind that there are many ways to showcase your DIY balloon arch especially since it can stay up for up to one week. We chose to highlight ours with a dessert table underneath to which we would add sweet treats in the same color scheme.
However, you don’t have to install your balloon arch by the dessert table. Here are some alternative locations for your DIY balloon arch:
- As a photo booth backdrop
- Above the entryway
- Above the dining table
- Near a fireplace
- By the gift table
Now that you have followed our guide, you should be confident about hosting a party that will impress your guests. No matter the event or reason for celebration, a DIY balloon arch is a great focal point decor element.
Best of all, it doesn’t have to be perfect. Whatever you create, rest assured it will be unique. And you would have saved a significant amount of money DIY-ing this balloon arch.
